Childproofing Products - Furniture Safety
NOTES REGARDING FURNITURE SAFETY:
According to the CPSC, at least 5,000 children under the age of 10 go to the emergency room each year due to injuries from television sets, bookcases, and other furniture and appliances tipping over. About six people die from furniture tipovers every year, most of them children under the age of 5. These injuries and deaths frequently occur when children climb on items such as shelves, bookcases, dressers, bureaus, desks, chests and television stands. In some cases, televisions on top of furniture slip off the stand and fall on top of the child. Children often open up drawers to climb to the top of the furniture to get an item.
There have been many unfortunate deaths to children that were totally preventable, if the parents had thought to properly tether their furniture to a wall stud, especially all furniture in the child’s room and play area (but it should not be limited to this where there are other areas of concern throughout the entire home). See www.katieeliselambert.org for an unfortunate story about a child who was crushed by a piece of furniture.
It is important to check your entire house for items that may topple, such as dressers, bookcases, entertainment centers, tall floor lamps and the like.
Also see the March 2006-2007 Article in Consumer Reports on Furniture Falls. The article sates that every year 9 children, usually younger than 9 years old are killed when furniture tips on to them. An estimated 8,000 to 10,000 people, mostly children are hurt.
We install a variety of other furniture safety items, like furniture tethers, flat-screen TV retaining bars, foam strips, expandable foam wraps, and other items. Below are some photos of these products.
